This is my greeting card range - hope you enjoy them! I left them message free as I I think Your own words, however modest, will (hopefully!) always mean more. The descriptions below provide the story behind the card.
My cards have sold in Australian gift and homeware shops, bookstores, florists, nurseries, department stores, university stores, newsagencies, milk bars and speciality shops.
If you are interested in finding out more, please feel free to contact me.
JW001 It's the thought that counts?
Quite obviously this gleeful creature doesn't think it's the thought that counts when it comes to presents - she's elated by the massive size of the present and wildly excited about what it might contain. Her rather exhausted friends (or family members) are of little concern - it's the present that counts!
JW002 No place to hide
I've known a few people who find birthdays (especially older birthdays) and all the fuss that goes with them truly appalling. They just want to run for the hills and hide. The Christmas season has the same effect for some - I've had people buy this card for Christmas. I just loved the idea of having a mob of mad, excited little presents running in hot pursuit after a deeply reluctant, fully grown 'birthday boy' who has just woken up. The horror!
JW003 Sweet love
Basically this is my idea of what matters when two people get married or engaged. It's just them, enjoying the moment.
JW004 It was love at first sight ...
I've spent many hours at sporting events (cricket, AFL football and rugby union mostly) with my father and friends over the years. I love the atmosphere you get from sporting crowds. Occasionally, if you're lucky, there's a streaker; sometimes more than one. I've always enjoyed the reckless abandonment of streakers - I find them hilarious and very human. This is my ode to streakers and the joyous concept of love at first sight.
JW005 Hold on tight
This romantic card is my ode to roller coasters, the thrill of romantic love and recognition of the fact that love can be topsy turvy, it's not all plain sailing. These little creatures are deeply in love and having a wonderful time hurtling along on a roller coaster of love but the roller coaster is about to take a steep dive so they might want to hold on extra tight to make sure they get through it!
JW006 Happy Birthday
I'm pretty fond of green hills, blue skies, flowers and reading. I also love my sleep. This little creature is so relaxed that she's not even bothering to read at this moment in time; she's thoroughly content and hasn't a care in the world. What a delightful birthday ... !
JW007 Bundle of joy
A humorous take on babies, storks and bundles of joy. In this case the whole family goes on the ride whenever a new baby arrives. Some of the kids look a bit inbred I have to admit but they all having a wonderful time, except perhaps for the poor stork.
JW008 Bon voyage
I love travelling and wanted to show the simple excitement of the journey. Now that I think about it, I have also spent a lot of time flying in my dreams, usually through the night skies, so that's probably where this one is coming from.
This one came about from my visits over the years to ballet, opera and theatre performances and an appreciation of all the work and talent which has gone into them and the curtain calls at the end. This card is suitable for all sorts of congratulatory occasions.
JW010 Good luck
An old-fashioned 'Good Luck' card with all the usual symbols of luck but with a twist. I liked the idea of our shirtless, roly-poly hero jumping across two cliffs with sharks circling below. I am fond of him so the words 'Good Luck' are heartfelt!
JW011 Happy Gardener
This is my ode to Gardeners everywhere, especially my mother. I see it as a birthday or general card for all the devoted gardeners out there, a sort of 'Jill and the Beanstalk' (but in this case it's a wonderfully huge tomato plant). The little creature in the card is wearing one of the dresses my mum used to wear when I was growing up.
JW012 Bayside birthday
I love swimming in the sea on a hot day. I painted this birthday card when I was living in Elwood, a lovely bayside suburb just south of the Melbourne CBD.
JW013 Thank you
I like cups of tea - making them and offering them (must be the Scottish ancestry). I also like the idea that the same little creature who fell asleep reading her book on her birthday (JW006) has a nice partner (albeit one with very knobbly knees) who brings her cups of tea.
JW014 Happy Birthday
A funky little creature holding a beautiful oversized flower. Some of my favourite colours are in this card.
A shy, roly poly man holding a huge flower for the recipient of the card. He's the same guy as in my good luck card. I see it as a general card or a birthday card.
JW016 Birthday Express
This birthday card was inspired by a scene I saw out of my second storey window when I was living in Fitzroy. On a freezing cold, windy day I saw a skinny man driving a bright yellow VW Beetle dash into a video store opposite our home. He was wearing only a white singlet and shorts while people around him were warmly dressed and holding umbrellas. The scene stayed with me and somehow morphed into this birthday card with the videos replaced by a present - original image is in this gallery too :)
yellow car video man
Not a greeting card but the inspiration for JW016!
JW017 New baby
At first I was mainly caught up with painting an old fashioned pram for this new baby birthday card and then started to imagine a baby inside. They love throwing their toys over the sides and will do it repeatedly if you let them. I chose teddy bears as they are great toys and much loved, almost like pets!
JW018 Birthday cake
While I was working on my second range, my distributor suggested I put a birthday cake on one of my cards. I didn't particularly warm to the idea but decided to give it a go. I ended up really enjoying it. I'm not sure why the cake is blue but, then again, I can't explain why the candles are alive either except that I found them more interesting that way!
JW019 New baby
This pink-haired family are related in some ways to JW005. The parents have ridden the same roller coaster from that earlier card (they may not be the exact same two from JW005 as they do look a little different) and are now very happy with their new baby. For me it's a baby card for either a boy or a girl, given that the whole family have pink hair but it's up to you. :)
JW020 A good haul
Like JW012, this one was painted while I lived in Elwood, a bayside suburb of Melbourne. I liked the idea of the fish-like presents leaping all around and into the young girl's row boat on her birthday.
